Go Green

Go Green Committee

Your Go Green Committee is committed to helping reduce waste at Arroyo Seco, and promote education in the areas of reducing, reusing, recycling and rotting (compost). We are also working with staff on a garden project which teaches students the workings of a garden, from beginning to end.

Here’s what we are doing, and how you can help:

Drink Pouch Recycling: In one year, Arroyo Seco has collected and recycled over 15,000 drink pouches. For each drink pouch we recycle (through Terracycle), we earn $.02. This money goes back into the Go Green budget. If you would like to help us earn money through this program, and also reduce waste, please drop off your drink pouches in the can labeled “Drink Pouches Only” just outside the front entrance to the MPR. We ask that the straw is removed and they are drained (cut a slit in the middle of the very bottom of the pouch, so as not to damage the labeling. Terracycle turns these pouches into bags, pencil cases, etc.

Lunch Recycling Program: When we began this program last year, the custodian took out 10+ trash bags from the MPR during student lunch recess. With the lunch recycling process in place, we have reduced that to 3-4 bags of trash. If you are interested in helping occasionally in the lunch room, we are always looking for some helpers. It’s a great way to see how much food is wasted everyday.

Reducing paper: the Go Green Committee (GGC) funded the PTA’s purchase of Constant Contact, an online newsletter program. Not only did this reduce the amount of paper purchased and used by the PTA, it also reduces the cost of the copy contract. In an effort to ensure that everyone still reads the newsletter, the GGC is paying for two of three new bulletin boards to be placed around the school, in which the newsletter will be posted.

Bottle can recycling containers: Through a grant obtained by the GGC, we were able to purchase 5 locking recycle containers. In addition to the containers, the grant also paid for a compost bin, garden shed, wheelbarrow and tools for the garden.

What Can You Do?

Help us reduce waste by:

Giving your child reusable/washable containers (drink, sandwich, etc) in their reusable lunch bag.

Encourage your child to bring home what he/she doesn’t want to eat. Too often, does a child throw away a whole sandwich because he/she doesn’t want to take it home. The lunch recycling team encourages children to tell their lunch maker if they don’t like something, but if they feel like someone will get angry about that, they will just throw it away.

Save your drink pouches, bottles, aluminum cans and plastic bottles for the school! You will recycle, but also help the school earn much needed money for programs.

Bring your used batteries, printer toner cartridges to the school for recycling and disposal. The school will take care of it for you, and we will get credit in our annual calculation of waste that has been diverted from the landfill. (FYI, it is against the law to throw batteries in the trash anyway).

Use Freecycle (www.freecycle.org) as a way to give away or look for useful items for FREE! There are several groups in the area (Livermore, East Bay, Pleasanton, etc). Remember, one man’s trash is another man’s treasure!

If you like to receive information via email, ask your child’s teacher if she/he might be willing to communicate that way. It doesn’t work for everyone, but if even a few sheets of paper are saved, it makes a big difference.
